Newsletter May 2012

Dear friends,

I would like to share some news, links, recent collaborations, things that have happened and that will happen:

This Thursday I will be arriving to Europe with my cuarteto for a tour in Switzerland, Italy and Spain. We are traveling with support from the Colombian Embassy in Italy. We have these dates confirmed:

25 of May in La Fabbrica (Locarno, Suiza)
26 of May at the school SMAC (Chiasso, Suiza)
2 of June at Novara Jazz Festival (Italia)
5 of June at Robadors 23 (Barcelona, España)

Earlier this month, with the occasion of this tour and some concert we did in Bogotá, a substantial article appeared on Colombian newspaper El Espectador titled “Las Músicas de Ricardo Gallo“, written by Manuel Dueñas after a long interview we had. (In Spanish)

The disc “The Great Fine Line” of the group Tierra de Nadie  continues to receive positive reviews, recently at All About Jazz Italy (in Italian) by Paolo Peviani.

We will be performing with Tierra de Nadie in New York on July 2nd, tickets are available already at Joe’s Pub’s website. The original personnel will be there: Ray Anderson on trombone, Dan Blake on saxophones, Mark Helias on bass, Pheeroan akLaff on drums, Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, and myself on piano and compositions.

I have been working since last year with an interdisciplinary group led by artist Carmen Gil, called La Quinta del Lobo. We premiered on march the work Vanitas Libellum at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, and we presented it in late April at Festival de La Imagen in Manizales (Colombia). We will be in Lima at the end of July at Teatro Britanico.

Last year I received a grant by Colombian Ministry of Culture for an artist residency at Banff, Canadá. The residency is scheduled for October-November this year and I will be finishing a piece for Yarn/Wire, a New-York based ensemble of two pianists and two percussionists.

Some links to listen to: On the web-radio program Antenas-Intervenciones broadcasted in several Latin-american stations a program on my music appeared in February (In Spanish but the program is mostly music!)

matik-matik, continues to publish on their website the concerts happening at this venue, in audio as well as in video in their YouTube channel. I don’t want to bore you with a list of concerts I have participated there within the last year because there have been many and very varied, but I invite you to check out this link and listen to the underground in Bogotá. And of course, keep returning to La Distritofonica and listen to the discs of our collective, including the three of my quartet.

Thanks for reading, listening, and supporting.

Ricardo Gallo.
